Lumitrend Sets Sail with New Products

June 20, 2005.   Lumitrend admits to frustrations that led to a few handsets being thrown out the window, but say it was all in the name of developing a cellular phone back-up solution for the mass market.

The founders of Lumitrend today formally announced their family of mobile applications. Robert Meadows and Garrett Larsson founded Lumitrend with the intent of developing software to make it easier for people to deal with lost, damaged or misplaced phones. While other solutions allow for syncing phones with computers, they wanted to make it a no-brainer for people to protect their data on the phone without cables or wires.

They identified BREW as the platform for their first solutions, some of which are being used by carriers such as Alltel and Midwest Wireless. That was in part because they viewed BREW as more ahead of the game and the revenue model was more appealing than alternatives such as Java. Plus, they say, not many Java handsets on the market have the JSR 75 needed for the kind of access to contacts and calendars they needed.

Lumitrend's product family now includes: Ringvault for storing ringtones; CellBackup for wirelessly backing up a subscriber's mobile phonebook to a secure online Website; and CellSynx for automatically syncing a copy of a subscriber's contacts, calendar events, tasks and notes. Typically, the solutions cost end-users no more than $1 or $2 a month.

Meadows, Lumitrend's CEO, and Larsson, the vice president of business development, say one of the first segments they approached with their idea was wireless carriers, where they found keen interest. They also worked with content providers on digital rights management, ultimately developing a system that prevents users from making more than one copy of their data. They're also are in talks with OEMs to get their solutions tied closer to the handsets.
